Joel Yawn, owner and creator of Yawn Studios, specializes in Raku, Pit and Saggar fired works.
Raku firing, in it's basic sense, is a form of ceramics that goes against the normal logic for firing clay. To achieve a Raku piece, Bisque fired clay items are quick heated in a kiln, removed while glowing hot (as shown in the stream of photos at the top of each of our web pages), placed into a container of flammable material, then covered to remove oxygen from its surrounding atmosphere for unique results.
In the Pit Firing process, raw materials are used to influence the surface of a piece. Bisque fired clay items are placed into a pit dug into the ground and various materials are placed around the pottery and a fire is built over them. After burning and cooling, the items are pulled from the pit and cleaned to discover the results.
Saggar Firing also involves surrounding the pottery with various materials, but in this process the pottery is placed inside a container, like a terracotta pot, along with the various materials. The contianer is then fired inside a kiln resulting in unique surface colors and designs.
